Self-Directed IRA

What is a Self Directed IRA (SDIRA)?

A "self directed IRA" with New Direction IRA allows account holders to buy the full range of allowable assets, including real estate, precious metals, private equity, stocks and more with their IRAs. Investors can turn any plan type (Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, HSA) into a self directed IRA as long as the account is held by a self directed IRA custodian.  Self directed IRA plans have the same tax advantages as non-self directed IRAs.

What does self directed mean?

"Self-directed" is a descriptive term, not a legal or IRS distinction and is most often used to indicate an IRA that buys "alternative" or hard assets like real estate, gold, private equity, notes, etc.

People often use descriptive terms like "Gold IRA" or "Real Estate IRA" to refer to a "self directed IRA" that holds those particular assets.

Self directed IRAs have existed since the inception of the Traditional IRA in the mid-1970s. The IRS has always allowed IRAs to purchase any asset except life insurance and collectibles.

New Direction IRA is proud to present these completely free Self Directed IRA educational videos.

Self Directed IRA Benefits

Self directed IRA accounts offer IRA holders the ability to choose the types of investments that meet their needs. Account holders like the flexibility that a self directed account provides—clients have invested in assets as varied as trees, oil and livestock. An investor can rely on their own investment expertise, making tax-free or tax-deferred investments in assets they know and understand personally.

For instance, a self directed IRA with investments in real estate can charge rent to tenants or visitors, let land appreciate in value, rent commercial space to business, fix and flip property and much more (plus, the property can be distributed for personal use after reaching retirement age.)

While most IRA providers limit investments to publicly traded securities, funds or bank CDs/savings accounts, a self directed IRA account lets investors put funds in alternative assets and realize the true depth of their investment opportunities.

Self directed IRAs allow investors control and diversification of retirement funds, while giving them the ability to adapt to economic conditions. With ongoing stock market volatility, more and more investors are turning to self directed IRAs to invest their retirement funds in what they know and trust.
